Andy Samberg’s Journey from The Lonely Island to Brooklyn Nine-Nine!

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Former Saturday Night Live (SNL) star Andy Samberg, almost 43, was born in Berkeley, California on August 18, 1978. This comedian wasn’t originally named Andy. He changed his birth name Andrew David Samberg to Andy, might for the convenience of pronunciation and recognition. Or, it could be something he has been called his whole life by his friends and family, a nickname- shorter version for Andrew. Fans say it’s fun to guess.

He is the recipient of two Golden Globes( 2021 and 2014) (best actor in musical or comedy television series) for his performance in the popular sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013-2022) where he portrays the role of Jake Peralta, the main protagonist. Andy has come a long way in his career, however, his debut wasn’t isn’t any less for a great story.

Andy Samberg’s Debut story

In 2000, Andy along with The Lonely Island’s two other members- Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, wrote their first song Ka-Blamo! which was released on YouTube a day prior to Christmas in 2005. They officially formed their comedy troupe in 2001 and have released numerous witty songs and short videos (as they call it- digital shorts) since then.

Regarding Ardy (2003), Awesometown (2005), White Power (2001) swirled their way around the internet capturing the attention of MTV who invited The Lonely Island to write for their Movie Awards show in 2005.

How did he get into Saturday Night Live?

These three dudes impressed the host for Awards night Jimmy Fallon, the veteran host put a word for them for the Saturday Night Live. As a result, making it through the auditions, all of them worked for the show- Andy as a cast and the other two as writers.

Andy’s Music Videos and Awards

While their digital shorts were featured in the SNL segments, Andy stole the show with his musical parody “D*$% in a Box” in 2007. The smutty yet hysterical music video featured “Mirrors” singer Justin Timberlake. As a matter of fact, D*#* in a Box video even won an Emmy for Outstanding Music and Lyrics.

Andy was nominated consecutively twice for the Emmy Awards for Mother Lover ft. Justin Timberlake in 2009 and Shy Ronnie ft. Rihanna in 2010. To everybody’s surprise, “I’m on a Boat”, a song Samberg made in collaboration with T-Pain, an R&B singer was nominated for Grammys in 2010.

In 2012, Andy already had enough of SNL and announced his departure from the show in June of 2012.

It’s an incredibly emotional and strange moment in my life. Obviously it’s not a huge shock, bit I did officially decide not to come back,” he said to The New York Times on June 01, 2012.

This versatile artist wasn’t looking for a recurring role in television series until he read Brooklyn Nine Nine’s script.

One of the important events of 2012 in Andy’s life was his speech as a class day guest speaker at Harvard. Well, unlike previous class day speakers like Bill Gates, he didn’t go to Harvard for studies, however, his speech stole everybody’s thunder who stood at that podium to deliver a class day speech. He was absolutely spontaneous and witty.

His work credits exceed many pages, however, here’s a list of some of his popular movies:

  1. Hot Rod (2007)
  2. I Love You, Man (2009)
  3. That’s My Boy (2012)
  4. Hotel Transylvania(2012)
