Blade Runner 2049 Fails To Impress & Bombs At The Box Office With $32.7M

Blade Runner 2049 just became the newest member of the “Bloated Budget Bombs” club even after securing the number one spot at the box office. This year, Hollywood also had one of the worst summer seasons, in more than a decade with a series of bombs and underperforming movies. Thankfully, New Line Cinema’s IT got released just on time to put the Hollywood box office back on track and recently crossed the $600 million mark. This makes IT the highest grossing horror movie ever and the movie still sits comfortably on the number 3 spot at the box office, right now. Warner Bros.’ Blade Runner 2049 did impress the critics who called it a “Sci-fi Masterpiece” but failed to captivate the fans on its opening. The highly-anticipated sequel to 1982’s Blade Runner only managed to make $32.7 million on its opening weekend. While some may call it a decent opening, Warner Bros. was expecting a figure anywhere from $50-$60 million for its $150 million budget movie.

Blade Runner 2049 opened in 4,058 theaters and managed to earn $7,769 per-screen average. The sequel made $50.2 million overseas bringing its worldwide opening weekend total to a modest $81.7 million. The movie is scheduled to open in just 2 more markets first of which is South Korea (October 12) followed by Japan (October 27). Blade Runner 2049 won’t open in China and with just 2 comparatively small markets left in the world, it’s safe to assume that Blade Runner 2049 is going to tank. The movie has a runtime of 3 hours and takes place 30 years after the events of the Blade Runner movie. A new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling) unearths a deadly, long-buried secret that can plunge the already devastated society into war. K embarks on a journey to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) the former Blade Runner who hasn’t been seen in the past 30 years. Rest of the cast includes Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, Carla Juri, Mackenzie Davis, Lennie James, Dave Bautista and Jared Leto. The movie is directed by Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Arrival) and produced by the great Ridley Scott.

Idris Elba and Kate Winslet‘s The Mountain Between Us currently sits at the second place and made an estimated $10.1 million. We’ll have 4 new movies opening next week which are STX Entertainment’s The Foreigner starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan, Open Road Films’ Marshall, Universal’s horror-thriller Happy Death Day and Annapurna Pictures’ Professor Marston and the Wonder Women.
