Disney+ and TV Azteca Strike Historic Strategic Deal to Bring “MasterChef Mexico 24/7” and More to Streaming

MasterChef 24/7

In a move that signals a significant shift in the Latin American streaming landscape, Disney+ has officially entered into a multi-year content agreement with Mexican media giant TV Azteca. The partnership, which was unveiled earlier this week, represents a strategic pivot for the Walt Disney Company as it seeks to deepen its local relevance in Mexico, one of the world’s most competitive and lucrative Spanish-language media markets.

At the center of this landmark deal is the highly anticipated expansion of the MasterChef México franchise. For the first time, Disney+ will become the exclusive streaming home for a brand-new iteration of the culinary competition titled MasterChef México 24/7. This innovative format, produced by Banijay Americas’ EndemolShine Boomdog, is designed to revolutionize the way audiences consume reality television by providing a continuous, around-the-clock window into the lives of the contestants.

Redefining the Reality TV Experience

Scheduled to premiere on May 17, MasterChef México 24/7 will offer a dual-platform experience. While TV Azteca’s flagship channel, Azteca Uno, will continue to air traditional two-hour primetime episodes featuring the high-stakes cooking challenges and dramatic eliminations fans have come to love, Disney+ will provide a literal “all-access pass.”

Subscribers will be able to livestream the daily lives of the aspiring chefs within the MasterChef house, capturing everything from behind-the-scenes prep work and late-night culinary experiments to the personal tensions and alliances that inevitably form in a high-pressure environment. This move mimics the “Big Brother” model of constant surveillance, adapted specifically for the gastronomic world. Industry analysts suggest that this “24/7” approach is intended to drive “stickiness” on the Disney+ platform, encouraging users to log in multiple times a day to check on the progress of their favorite contestants.

A Strategic Alliance in a Fragmented Market

The collaboration between Disney+ and TV Azteca is more than just a single-show licensing deal; it is a tactical alliance aimed at fending off growing competition from other regional and global players. In Mexico, the streaming wars have intensified following the recent merger of Televisa and Univision, which birthed the powerhouse streamer ViX. By partnering with TV Azteca—Mexico’s second-largest broadcaster—Disney is ensuring it has a steady stream of high-profile, locally produced “appointment television” that appeals to a broad demographic.

For TV Azteca, the deal provides a sophisticated digital outlet for its premium intellectual property. Despite its dominance in linear broadcasting, the network has faced the same challenges as other traditional media companies: a younger audience that is increasingly migrating away from cable and toward on-demand content. By placing MasterChef on Disney+, TV Azteca gains access to a massive digital subscriber base and a platform known for its premium user interface and global reach.

Expanding the Local Content Pipeline

While MasterChef México 24/7 is the flagship project, the agreement is expected to encompass a broader range of content over time. Disney has been vocal about its “hyper-local” strategy, recognizing that while Marvel and Star Wars franchises have global appeal, local hits are what drive long-term retention in markets like Latin America.

“Our goal is to complement our unparalleled global library with stories that resonate deeply with the Mexican culture and lifestyle,” a Disney spokesperson noted regarding the deal. “TV Azteca has a proven track record of creating cultural phenomena, and we are thrilled to bring that energy to Disney+.”

The production of MasterChef México 24/7 is handled by EndemolShine Boomdog, the same production house behind hits like La Casa de los Famosos México. Their expertise in managing large-scale reality formats ensures that the technical requirements of a 24-hour livestream—a feat that involves dozens of cameras and a massive editorial team—will meet the high standards expected by Disney+ subscribers.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Streaming Bundles

This partnership also highlights a growing trend of “frenemy” relationships in the media world. Just as Disney recently announced a distribution partnership with TelevisaUnivision to bundle Disney+ with ViX in certain tiers, this deal with TV Azteca shows that the company is willing to work with multiple local titans to ensure its platform remains essential.

As the May 17 premiere date approaches, the industry will be watching closely to see if the “24/7” format translates to a significant bump in Disney+ subscriptions in Mexico. If successful, it could serve as a blueprint for similar reality TV expansions across other international markets, blending the reach of traditional broadcast television with the immersive capabilities of modern streaming.

For the viewers, the message is clear: the kitchen is always open, and with Disney+ and TV Azteca, you won’t have to miss a single second of the heat.
