FOX Renews ‘Murder in a Small Town’ for Third Season

Murder in a Small Town

In a move that signals continued confidence in its international production strategy, Fox has officially renewed its breakout crime drama Murder in a Small Town for a third season. The announcement comes on the heels of a successful second season that saw the series grow its audience across both traditional broadcast and streaming platforms. Fans of the “cozy noir” series can look forward to ten new episodes, alongside the addition of veteran actor Peter Gallagher to the regular cast.

A Growing Success Story for Fox

Murder in a Small Town first premiered in late 2024 as part of Fox’s new push toward cost-efficient, high-quality international co-productions. Based on the acclaimed Alberg and Cassandra Mysteries novel series by the late L.R. Wright, the show quickly carved out a niche for itself. While many procedurals lean into the gritty and hyper-violent, this series—set in the picturesque coastal town of Gibsons, British Columbia—found success by blending intricate murder mysteries with a grounded, maturing romance.

The renewal was largely expected by industry insiders. According to network data, the series saw an 11 percent increase in its seven-day multiplatform audience during its second season. It has also become a reliable performer on Hulu and other streaming services, reaching series-high viewership numbers in the spring of 2026. Brooke Bowman, Executive Vice President of Drama Programming and Development for Fox, praised the show’s ability to captivate audiences, noting that the network is “thrilled to continue the journey of Karl Alberg.”

New Faces and High Stakes

The biggest news accompanying the Season 3 renewal is the casting of Peter Gallagher (The O.C., Grace and Frankie). Gallagher is set to play Rod Finlayson, a character described as charismatic, fiercely independent, and highly capable, yet notably unreliable.

Finlayson’s arrival in Gibsons is expected to stir the pot significantly. He arrives at the local marina on his beloved boat, and his presence reportedly sets off a chain of “upheavals” that will force the show’s central duo to confront new personal and professional challenges. Gallagher’s addition adds significant star power to a cast that already features strong leads in Rossif Sutherland and Kristin Kreuk.

Picking Up After the Season 2 Cliffhanger

Season 3 will have plenty of emotional groundwork to cover following the dramatic conclusion of Season 2. In the finale, Karl Alberg (Sutherland) finally took the leap and proposed to Cassandra Lee (Kreuk). The moment was fraught with tension; rather than a fairy-tale “yes,” the episode ended with Cassandra looking stunned and hesitant while Karl’s daughter watched from the doorway.

Executive producer Ian Weir has teased that while the proposal created immediate friction, the bond between the two remains the heart of the show. Weir assured fans in recent interviews that while the couple will have to “grapple” with the implications of Karl’s question—especially with the disruptive arrival of Gallagher’s character—the creative team has no intention of breaking the pair up. Instead, Season 3 will explore what a long-term commitment looks like for two people who have already lived full, sometimes battered, lives.

The Allure of Gibsons

Central to the show’s appeal is its setting. Filmed on location in Gibsons, British Columbia, the series utilizes the natural beauty of the Sunshine Coast to create a “gentle paradise” that masks dark secrets. The show’s production strategy—a partnership between Sepia Films, Fox Entertainment, and Future Shack Entertainment—allows for a high-gloss look with the benefits of Canadian tax incentives and local expertise.

As the series enters its third year, it joins an elite list of Fox scripted staples like The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Animal Control. With a 10-episode order, Season 3 promises to delve deeper into the nine-book source material provided by L.R. Wright, ensuring that even as the town of Gibsons remains idyllic on the surface, there will be no shortage of bodies washing up on Karl Alberg’s shore.
