James Cameron is definitely putting back the old band together for Terminator 6 and this is exactly what fans have been wanting for a long time. Terminator 6 is shaping up more like a sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day rather than a reboot. The Terminator himself announced last month that he’s very excited about making Terminator 6 with the creator of the franchise, James Cameron, one more time. Cameron will be producing Terminator 6 instead of directing as he’s got his hands full with the Avatar sequels. However, Cameron can still do justice to Terminator 6 by giving out valuable creative advice. As always, the legendary action star Arnold Schwarzenegger will be coming back as the iconic T-800 cyborg and now Linda Hamilton who played Sarah Connor in the first 2 Terminator movies, will be officially joining the team once again. This means that the trio of Hamilton, Schwarzenegger, and Cameron will be working together for the first time in 26 years. The official announcement of Linda Hamilton’s return was made by James Cameron himself at a private party celebrating the franchise. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news with this official statement from the producer:
“As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return.”
We reported just a week ago that Deadpool director Tim Miller will be the one directing Terminator 6 and this is going to be his second movie as a director. He will work on a script which is being written at the moment under the close supervision of James Cameron himself. Terminator 6 is going to launch a new trilogy of Terminator movies. Each new movie is said to be a stand-alone movie but will also have an interconnected story. Some huge names like David Goyer, Charles Eglee and Josh Friedman will also be working on the trilogy in different capacities. David Goer famously worked with Christopher Nolan on the Dark Knight movies and has a history of creating epic movies. Charles Eglee created the hit TV series Dark Angel with James Cameron back in 2000-02 and Josh Friedman is responsible for creating The Sarah Connor Chronicles TV show. When you look at their stellar portfolios, it looks like the new Terminator trilogy is going to be epic.
Terminator 6 will focus on the real person the machines based their killer T-800 on. James Cameron announced the idea but obviously, rest of the details are being kept secret. Of course, Schwarzenegger will be the one playing the titular role of the movie which is being touted as the direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day. While the news of old cast reuniting once again is exciting, James Cameron intends to introduce new characters in order to create an ‘old gang passes the baton’ sort of film. Star Wars: The Force Awakens did the same thing and it proved to be a massive hit. Cameron mentioned that:
“We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story. We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters, but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it.”
Speaking of old cast members, Cameron did not say anything regarding the return of Robert Patrick and Ed Furlong. At this point, we don’t know whether it’s even a possibility or not. There is no official release date on the cards at the moment but there are reports that Paramount is eyeing a 2019 release date.
