Stephen King Horror Movie ‘The Boogeyman’ Clocks $20 Million WorldWide Debut

The Boogeyman

20th Century Studios and 21 Laps’ ‘The Boogeyman’ which was based on a Stephen King story clocked another impressive win at the box office for the legendary author, debuting in the 3rd overall spot on the domestic charts this past weekend in theaters.

In the United States, the film managed to scare up $12.3 million during it’s debut at the box office over the weekend, with it’s global box office total reaching $20 million in total. With a reported budget of $35 million, the film would need to surpass the $100 million mark to be considered profitable. Given it’s strong start, it seems completely possible.

According to ScreenRant, this is the highest opening weekend for a Stephen King film in years.

The movie wasn’t always slated for a release in theaters, as it was originally scheduled to hit streaming platform Hulu, and likely other PPV streaming platform as well, but Disney made the call to run it in the theaters.

According to the synopsis:

High school student Sadie Harper and her younger sister Sawyer are reeling from the recent death of their mother and aren’t getting much support from their father, Will, a therapist who is dealing with his own pain.

“When a desperate patient unexpectedly shows up at their home, he leaves behind a terrifying supernatural entity that preys on families and feeds on the suffering of its victims.”

Sophie Thatcher (“Yellowjackets”) and Chris Messina (Birds of Prey) star alongside David Dastmalchian (DuneThe Suicide Squad), Marin Ireland (Y: The Last Man, The Umbrella Academy), Vivien Lyra Blair (Bird BoxMr. Corman) and Madison Hu (Voyagers).

The original story was first published in 1973 and would eventually land in Stephen King’s Night Shift collection in 1978. This marks the first time that the story has been adapted into a film, joining a host of other King stories that have made the big screen such as ‘It’ and ‘Pet Semetary’, among others.
