Prime Video has officially invited audiences to go back to school—and back in time—with the first trailer for its highly anticipated Legally Blonde prequel series, titled simply Elle. This new look at the beloved franchise takes fans back to the 1990s, chronicling the formative high school years of the iconic Elle Woods before she traded her Malibu roots for the hallowed halls of Harvard Law.
A New Face for a Cultural Icon
The trailer introduces newcomer Lexi Minetree as the teenage Elle Woods, stepping into the fashionable shoes first made famous by Reese Witherspoon in the 2001 classic. While taking over such a legendary role is no small feat, the teaser showcases Minetree capturing the same infectious optimism and unwavering confidence that defined the character over two decades ago.
Set to the nostalgic sounds of Hoku’s “Perfect Day”—the upbeat anthem that opened the original film—the trailer begins with a quintessential 90s Bel-Air birthday bash. We see Elle surrounded by her family and hundreds of friends at a lavish mansion, embodying the “popular girl” persona. However, the story quickly pivots when her parents (played by Tom Everett Scott and June Diane Raphael) drop a bombshell: the family is moving to Seattle for her father’s job.
Seattle: The Ultimate Fish-Out-Of-Water Story
While the original Legally Blonde was a fish-out-of-water story about a California girl in the Ivy League, Elle finds its conflict in the rainy Pacific Northwest. Uprooted from her sunny, pink-saturated life in California, teenage Elle must navigate a 1990s Seattle high school scene dominated by grunge, flannel, and a distinct lack of “bend and snap” energy.
The trailer highlights the visual contrast between Elle’s signature hot-pink wardrobe and the muted, moody tones of her new environment. Despite the cultural clash, the footage makes it clear that Elle’s spirit remains unbreakable. She is seen arriving at her new school in a bright pink ensemble, undeterred by the stares of her new peers, and accompanied by a younger (but just as stylish) Bruiser the Woods.
Behind the Scenes and Cast
The series is a major production from Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and Amazon MGM Studios. Witherspoon serves as an executive producer, along with Lauren Neustadter and Marc Platt, the producer of the original films. The show was created by Laura Kittrell (Insecure, High School), who serves as co-showrunner alongside Caroline Dries.
The supporting cast is equally impressive. In addition to Scott and Raphael as Elle’s parents, the series stars Chandler Kinney, Jacob Moskovitz, and Gabrielle Policano. Notably, the production includes some of the final work from the late James Van Der Beek, who joined the cast in a recurring role prior to his passing.

In a rare move for streaming platforms, Prime Video has already signaled its immense faith in the project. Along with the trailer release and the announcement of a July 1, 2026 premiere date, the streamer officially confirmed that Elle has been renewed for a second season before the first has even aired.

According to the creators, the series explores the “life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know.” By moving the setting to Seattle, the show explores how Elle maintains her positivity and authenticity when the world around her tells her she doesn’t fit in—a theme that remains as relevant today as it was in 2001.
